There are several legal avenues for acquiring Spanish nationality. Each has specific requirements, so it's important to identify the one that best suits your situation:

Nationality by residence

This is the most common way to acquire citizenship. It requires having resided legally, continuously, and immediately prior to the application for citizenship, generally for a period of 10 years.

This period is reduced in certain cases:

  • 5 years for refugees.

  • 2 years for nationals of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, or people of Sephardic origin.

  • 1 year in specific situations (marriage to a Spaniard, those born in Spain, descendants of Spaniards, among others).

In addition to length of residence, you will need to prove that you have no criminal record and demonstrate an adequate level of integration into Spanish society. This is assessed, among other means, through the DELE (Spanish language proficiency) and CCSE (Spanish constitutional and sociocultural knowledge) tests.
